The Valley has recovered 7 out of every 10 jobs it lost in spring 2020
In March and April of last year, the Valley lost 73,800 or 1 out of every 5 payroll jobs. By any account, this is a devastating blow. Thanks to the stimulus and transfer payment packages, the economy did not fall into a depression. And as of the end of June 2021, 71% of the jobs lost were recovered, placing total local employment at 406,600 (SA) which is still 5% short of its pre-pandemic level. The loss of jobs in the US exceeded 25 million by April 2020, a loss of 16.7% of all the jobs in two months, almost the same as in the Lehigh Valley. Seventy-two percent of the jobs lost last year were recovered by June 2021, and the total number of jobs in the US is now only 4% below its pre-pandemic level, slightly better than that of the Lehigh Valley.
